Never Go to the Grocery Store Without...

A shopping list? Yeah, that would be the obvious answer.

But, I've got something even better (that you're less likely to forget at home, to boot).

Never go the grocery store without...

Drumroll...

Your smartphone! Yep, it's always in your purse or pocket when you go to replenish your fridge.

Smartphones are seen by some as money suckers, especially since several companies have switched to small monthly installments plans... yeah, I made that iPhone mistake...

What if you were able to turn what you spend on your phone each month into savings? That is to say, turn your phone into a money maker?!

I never go to the grocery store without my smartphone because
a) It's a generational thing. Most mid 20-somethings have their smartphone with them at all times, right?
b) More importantly though, my phone is my most important tool to cut a grocery bill (even more efficient than coupons, and less time consuming!)

By trying out a series of apps for your smartphone, you'll find your sweetspot with the app(s) that will save you the most money. Below is a list of apps that I actually use, along with my savings to date.

Cartwheel by Target: Add percentage off deals (5-50% off) to your personal barcode and present to your cashier before paying. Savings will be automatically deducted. Savings to date: $703.90

iBotta: Complete tasks to add rebate offers on specific items. When you get home from the store, scan the bar code from the matching items and capture your receipt. Savings paid (with $20 minimum cashout threshold) to PayPal, Venmo, or gift card. Savings to date: $515.45

Find&Save: Add store-specific offers (example: 2% back when you spend $50+ at Whole Foods). Be sure to read the offer terms (offer won't work if you're buying gift cards, for example) and be aware of the minimum spend (before tax but after coupons, discounts, and CRV). Savings paid (with$25 cashout threshold) to PayPal. We even used this app to save on an engagement ring! Savings to date: $79.28

Savings Catcher by Walmart: Scan the QR code at the bottom of your receipt and you'll get money back for automatically price matched deals from local stores. Savings to date: $74.00

MobiSave: Add rebate offers on specific items to your cart and redeem by capturing your receipt. Savings paid (with no minimum cashout threshold) to PayPal. Savings to date: $33.15

Raise: Purchase gift cards at a discount (delivered electronically to app or a physical card via mail). Alternatively, sell unwanted gift cards using the app and get paid directly into your checking account. Savings to date: $30.64

Checkout51: Add rebate offers on specific items to your starred list. When you get home from the store, capture your receipt. Savings paid (with $20 minimum cashout threshold) via mailed check. Savings to date: $29.50

Checkout 51 Home

SavingStar: Add rebate offers on specific items to your activated list. When you get home from the store, scan the bar code from the matching items and capture your receipt. Savings paid (with $5 minimum cashout threshold) to PayPal, American Forests (charity), or bank deposit. Savings to date: $15.72

Shrink: Add rebate offers on specific items to your shopping list (in app). When you get home from the store, scan the bar code from the matching items and capture your receipt. Savings paid (with $10 minimum cashout threshold) to PayPal or Venmo. Savings to date: $6.35
